General Motors announced a software update for upcoming Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, featuring a new picture-in-picture interface for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This update clarifies the automaker's stance on phone mirroring systems, which remain available in its gasoline-powered vehicles.
The company previously removed phone projection from its electric vehicle lineup starting in 2023. Models including the Chevy Equinox, Blazer, Bolt, and Silverado EVs, as well as Cadillac and GMC electric vehicles, utilize native Google Automotive Services instead of phone mirroring.
GM CEO Mary Barra previously suggested in October 2025 that the policy of removing phone projection could extend to gas-powered vehicles. However, the company later clarified that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto would remain accessible in those models for the foreseeable future.
Colin McCormick, group product manager at GM, stated that the company aims to integrate native systems and phone projection to avoid forcing customers to choose between them. The new UI design represents an effort to allow both systems to coexist within the vehicle's infotainment environment.
