General Motors is reversing its previous decision to remove Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support from its vehicle lineup. The company originally began phasing out these smartphone integration systems in 2023, aiming to transition users toward a proprietary platform built on Google technologies.
The new multimedia interface will debut in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models. This system allows for the simultaneous display of smartphone projections alongside native vehicle functions, such as trailer management, vehicle status updates, and interactive maps.
Market feedback played a significant role in the reversal, as industry data indicated that 79% of new car buyers considered only vehicles equipped with CarPlay support. Furthermore, the technology was present in approximately 98% of all new vehicles sold, making its absence a competitive disadvantage.
Beyond smartphone integration, the updated trucks will feature 3D movement visualization for the Super Cruise system, hands-free towing controls, and over-the-air software updates. GM plans to implement this dual-interface system across its pickup line before expanding it to other models.
