General Motors has announced a recall of 1,559 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks due to a defect in the roof-rail airbag inflators. The affected vehicles were manufactured between April 30 and May 11, 2016, and include specific 2016 and 2017 models of the Silverado 1500, 2500, 3500, and Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500.
The issue stems from a manufacturing flaw where moisture trapped in the inflator canister causes stress-corrosion cracking. This can lead to the inflator rupturing and potentially releasing metal fragments into the cabin. NHTSA estimates that approximately 1 percent of the recalled vehicles carry this defect.
The recall was initiated after a report from a 2016 Silverado 1500 owner on July 20, 2026, regarding a rupture in the left-side roof-rail airbag. GM inspected the vehicle on August 28 and confirmed the damage. No other injuries or ruptures related to this specific inflator lot have been reported.
Dealers will replace both the left and right roof-rail airbag modules free of charge. GM plans to begin notifying affected owners on November 9, 2026. Owners can verify if their vehicle is included in the recall by checking their VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup tool.
