GitHub has implemented a restriction preventing new users from registering accounts with Microsoft-owned Outlook and Hotmail email addresses. The platform took this measure following a surge in organized fraudulent activity and abuse linked to these specific domains.
Existing accounts associated with Outlook and Hotmail remain fully functional and are not affected by the new policy. Users attempting to create new profiles with these email providers will now encounter verification errors during the sign-up process.
The decision stems from the high reputation of Microsoft email services, which malicious actors frequently exploited to bypass security filters on various platforms. GitHub currently has no timeline for lifting these restrictions as it continues to evaluate security protocols.
