General Motors has decided to retain support for Apple CarPlay in select internal combustion engine vehicles. This move marks a shift from the company's 2023 strategy, which initially aimed to phase out CarPlay in future electric models to prevent direct projection of iPhone interfaces onto vehicle displays.

The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models are among the vehicles that will continue to feature CarPlay integration. Additionally, these trucks will be equipped with dedicated video screens for front-seat passengers, allowing for simultaneous display of entertainment content and driving information.

Michael Wahlstrom, Executive Director of Connected Applications and Services at GM, stated that the company is responding to customer feedback. GM is collaborating with Apple and Google to implement new split-screen technology, enabling the coexistence of projection-based services and native vehicle interfaces.

Previously, the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq became the first electric model to deviate from the company's policy by including standard support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This decision follows reports indicating that CarPlay availability has become a significant factor for consumers when purchasing new vehicles.
