Geely has launched 2.2MW charging stations in five Chinese cities, including Hangzhou, Shanghai, Ningbo, Jiaxing, and Xi’an. The system operates at 1,500V and 1,500A, allowing two vehicles to receive over 1MW of power simultaneously. The company plans to install 15,000 such sites by the end of next year.

The new 2.2MW charger follows the release of Geely’s 1.5MW system, which debuted in March. Geely also acquired a portion of NIO’s battery swapping unit, a deal valued at $2 billion. These developments highlight the rapid pace of infrastructure expansion, as BYD previously installed 10,000 chargers within five months of announcing its own 1.5MW system.

In contrast, the US market remains behind in charging speeds. EVgo recently delayed the launch of its 750kW charging system to 2027, following a partnership originally formed in 2024. Currently, most US charging stations are capped at 350kW, while Tesla’s V4 Superchargers offer a 500kW peak, and its Megacharger for the Tesla Semi reaches 1.2MW.
