Garmin has officially acknowledged a software bug affecting the AMOLED display on its Fenix 8 smartwatch. The issue prevents the screen brightness from automatically dimming after the device has been exposed to bright light conditions.

The problem primarily occurs when users have the Always On Display feature enabled while the gesture-based wake-up function is turned off. Users report that the screen fails to adjust back to a lower brightness level when moving from a bright environment into a darker one.

The bug was first identified in software version 23.31, with some users continuing to experience the issue after updating to version 23.39. Garmin confirmed the defect on its community forum on October 7 and stated that a fix will be included in a future software update.

While waiting for the official patch, the company recommends that users manually tap the screen or press any button to restore normal brightness levels. This display issue coincides with separate reports of optical sensor malfunctions that prevent the watch from tracking heart rate data.
