GameStop has announced the reopening of select retail locations across the United States starting September 11, 2026. This decision follows a significant period of store closures, with approximately 470 locations identified as closed or slated for closure as of January 2026 to reduce operational costs.

The company is shifting its business focus away from physical software. According to fiscal 2025 filings, software sales, including physical discs and digital codes, accounted for 20.1% of total revenue. Meanwhile, collectibles have become a primary driver, representing 29.2% of revenue and showing a 47.7% year-over-year increase.

This move occurs amidst a broader industry trend toward digital distribution. Sony has notably announced plans to cease production of new physical PlayStation game discs by January 2028. GameStop's current strategy appears to be a limited reopening of specific sites rather than a full reversal of its previous retail footprint reduction.
