GameStop is currently listing pre-owned PlayStation 5 Pro consoles at prices significantly higher than Sony's official retail price of $899.99. The retailer is selling the standard pre-owned model for $1399.99, while the version with an optical drive is priced at $1499.99. Even GameStop Pro members are required to pay $1329.99 for the base model.
Internal documents confirm that management intentionally set these prices. The company has also increased its trade-in offers for the consoles, with buyback prices reaching $800 for the digital version and $850 for the disc-equipped model. These trade-in values exceed the console's original launch price of $699.99 from earlier in 2024.
The pricing strategy follows a period of supply shortages for the PS5 Pro, which saw its official price rise from $749.99 to $899.99 in April. With high demand driven by the upcoming November 19 release of Grand Theft Auto 6, third-party market prices for new units have frequently reached or exceeded $1500, making GameStop's pre-owned pricing competitive within the current market.
While GameStop has not issued an official statement, the leaked internal memo and subsequent website listings have been verified by employees. Market analysts suggest the company is leveraging the flexibility of the secondary market to maximize profits amid limited new hardware availability. There is no evidence linking this pricing to the development of console jailbreak tools.
