Trading of GAC Group shares was suspended on the Shanghai and Hong Kong stock exchanges on Monday, September 14. A company representative stated that a significant announcement is expected after the market close, though specific details remain undisclosed.
The suspension follows market speculation regarding a potential equity partnership or strategic restructuring between GAC and FAW. Prior to the halt, GAC shares on the Shanghai exchange were priced at 5.09 yuan, marking a 37.85 percent decline in value since the beginning of the year.
The move coincides with recent government initiatives to consolidate the Chinese automotive sector. On September 11, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released a five-year plan for the new energy vehicle industry, which encourages mergers and the elimination of inefficient production capacity.
Government officials, including representatives from the National Development and Reform Commission, have indicated support for reforms within large corporate groups. The policy aims to integrate research and production resources among leading manufacturers to reduce redundant competition.
