Fusionality, a Lausanne-based startup developing software for fusion reactor control, has secured CHF 3 million, or approximately $3.7 million, in a pre-seed funding round. The investment was led by Founderful and Playfair.

The company was founded by former Google DeepMind employees Federico Felici and Jonas Buchli. Their technology focuses on measurement, simulation, and control systems for fusion energy, addressing the need to convert plasma data into control signals within milliseconds.

The startup aims to provide a reusable software layer to help fusion companies reduce onboarding costs. Currently, most firms in the sector develop their control systems independently, leading to fragmented infrastructure.

The fusion sector has attracted over $14 billion in funding across 56 companies since 2021. However, the market faces competition from open-source initiatives, such as DeepMind's partnership with Commonwealth Fusion Systems.

Fusionality plans to use the new capital to hire control engineers, computational physicists, and software specialists. The team intends to secure its first paying customers to scale its operations in Switzerland.
