Framework, a modular computer manufacturer, has officially cancelled its One Key Module keyboard project. The decision follows a three-year development cycle that included initial design phases, prototyping, and a developer program launched earlier this year.
The company cited significant challenges in maintaining commercial viability. High material and assembly costs, combined with low manufacturing yields, made the product unsustainable. Framework noted that the high price point required to break even would have hindered mass-market adoption.
Technical difficulties also contributed to the project's closure. Both Framework and its suppliers struggled with the high costs associated with small-batch production of complex components. Furthermore, the modules proved difficult for even experienced DIY enthusiasts to integrate, as certain parts were fragile and hard to handle.
