Finnish authorities have ordered Google to halt construction at two data center sites in Muhos and Kajaani. The Regional State Administrative Agency required the suspension of all preparatory work with significant environmental impact by October 23, pending a formal environmental impact assessment.
Google's local subsidiary, Tuike Finland, had already cleared approximately 500 hectares of forest across both locations. The company acknowledged deviations from its internal standards but maintained it complied with local forestry laws. Google plans to initiate restoration efforts, including reforestation on 130 hectares in Muhos.
These projects are part of Google's broader strategy to expand AI infrastructure in Finland, supported by a planned €13 billion investment over two years. Environment Minister Sari Multala noted that the regulatory issues will likely cause project delays.
Meanwhile, French firm Sesterce announced plans to invest over €10 billion in a separate Finnish data center project in Jamsa. The facility aims for a capacity of 200 MW by 2026, with potential expansion to 1 GW. Sesterce intends to use closed-loop liquid cooling and allocate €10 million for local community projects.
