Over the past 20 days, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) recorded net inflows of approximately $1.08 billion. During the same period, Grayscale’s Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) experienced outflows totaling about $254.7 million. Data from Arkham Intelligence highlights significant daily inflows for IBIT, including $454 million on September 3 and $277.6 million on August 27.
The divergence in performance is largely attributed to fee structures. IBIT charges an annual fee of 0.25%, while GBTC charges 1.5%. This difference results in annual costs of $25,000 versus $150,000 for a $10 million position. Consequently, IBIT now manages over $60 billion in assets with holdings of 785,000 BTC, whereas GBTC holds roughly 130,000 BTC with an AUM near $10 billion.
US spot Bitcoin ETFs currently hold over 1.28 million BTC, accounting for approximately 6% of the total Bitcoin supply. The broader ETF sector attracted over $3 billion during the recent market surge. Bitcoin prices fluctuated between $60,000 and $80,000 during this timeframe. Grayscale has introduced the Bitcoin Mini Trust to compete on fees, yet outflows from its flagship product persist.
BlackRock leverages its global distribution network and management of $10 trillion in assets to maintain its market position. The competitive landscape for these products shifted significantly following the SEC approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024. As institutional adoption grows, the concentration of assets in lower-fee vehicles continues to reshape the market dynamics for Bitcoin investment products.
