FedEx and Stripe have announced a partnership to integrate operational data into the underwriting process for small and medium-sized businesses. The initiative, scheduled for 2027, will utilize intelligence from FedEx Dataworks to inform lending decisions through Stripe Capital.

This approach aims to move beyond traditional, backward-looking financial records by analyzing real-time logistics, inventory, and fulfillment data. By connecting information from separate commercial systems, the companies intend to assess creditworthiness based on current business activity.

Research from PYMNTS Intelligence indicates that 57% of financial institutions identify inaccurate or incomplete records as a primary obstacle to lending. Additionally, 52% of surveyed executives cited outdated or inconsistent information as significant barriers to providing capital.

The shift toward real-time financing creates new dynamics for business owners. While it may expand access to capital, it also increases dependence on specific platforms. Merchants may face challenges regarding data portability if their financing options are tied to the infrastructure of a single logistics or payments provider.
