The Federal Reserve Bank of New York announced it will reinvest $15.6 billion from maturing securities over the next three weeks. This operation maintains the current size of the Fed's balance sheet rather than injecting new liquidity into the financial system.
The central bank has extended the pause on Reserve Management Purchases (RMP) of Treasury bills through mid-October. This marks the second consecutive month without new RMP activity, following a period where the program was gradually scaled back from $40 billion in December 2025 to $10 billion per month by mid-2026.
As of September 9, bank reserves reached $3.04 trillion, exceeding the year-to-date average of $3.01 trillion. The RMP program was originally established to offset the impact of Treasury bill issuance, which drains cash from the banking system.
Market analysts remain divided on the future of the RMP program. Some experts anticipate a resumption of purchases in October or November at a rate of $10 billion to $20 billion per month, while others suggest the pause may continue if market conditions remain stable.
