Markets currently estimate a 90-94% probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate hike at today's FOMC meeting. This marks a significant change from the 36% probability recorded one month ago. If implemented, the federal funds target range will reach 3.75%-4.00%.
This potential increase follows six consecutive rate cuts totaling 175 basis points since July 2023. The decision would represent the first tightening cycle under the leadership of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, following persistent inflation levels above the 2% target and rising oil prices exceeding $100 per barrel.
Financial institutions including Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, and JPMorgan have updated their forecasts to reflect the expected hike. Additionally, the 10-year Treasury yield has surpassed 5%, reaching its highest point since 2007, while the US dollar has gained strength against major currencies.
The FOMC is expected to publish updated economic projections and a new dot plot. Analysts suggest that if these projections indicate higher rates, it would signal the start of a broader tightening cycle. Investors are now monitoring the upcoming statement and press conference for further guidance.
