The US government is implementing import bans on specific categories of consumer electronics originating from China. The restrictions target devices deemed a threat to national security, though the FCC has not provided public evidence to support these claims.
The policy began in December 2025 under the FCC, led by Brendan Carr, with a ban on all future foreign drones unless companies secure a specific waiver. This regulatory action expanded to include routers, power inverters, and robotic vacuum cleaners.
These measures follow long-standing restrictions on Chinese telecommunications equipment providers, specifically Huawei and ZTE. The government previously mandated that telecom operators remove and replace existing gear from these vendors.
The current import bans affect categories where domestic manufacturing capacity is limited. Most consumer electronics, including routers and drones, are produced outside the United States, similar to the supply chains for major laptop brands.
