Factorial Energy has partnered with Mitsui Kinzoku to scale the production of solid-state batteries. The collaboration combines Factorial's Solstice platform with Mitsui Kinzoku's sulfide-based solid electrolyte technology, which the Japanese manufacturer plans to produce at a dedicated facility in Saitama.
The Solstice platform offers an energy density of up to 450 Wh/kg, which is 80% higher than conventional lithium-ion batteries, and maintains stability at temperatures reaching 194°F. Factorial aims to utilize these advancements to address manufacturing scalability, a primary obstacle in the sector.
Factorial holds existing partnerships with automakers including Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Hyundai. In 2023, a Mercedes-Benz EQS equipped with Factorial cells achieved a range of over 745 miles. Additionally, the company is testing its FEST cells in Dodge Charger Daytona prototypes.
The company has secured investments from POSCO Future M and IQT. It received its first commercial order for passenger vehicles in January and an aerospace order in July. Factorial also signed an MOU with SK On to integrate its technology into a broader global manufacturing network.
CEO Siyu Huang indicated that Factorial's solid-state batteries could appear in electric vehicles as early as 2027. Initial deployment is expected to focus on high-performance and luxury models before expanding to mass-market electric vehicles.
