Eutelsat has conducted the first test of its OneWeb satellite internet service on a commercial train in Poland. The trial took place on a PKP Intercity train traveling between Kozlow, Warsaw, and Tczew, reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h.

The connection was powered by a Kymeta Kestrel u5 terminal, which recently earned railway certification from TÜV Rheinland. The hardware is built for harsh environments, featuring an IP69K rating and an average power consumption of under 100 W.

During the journey, engineers monitored OneWeb performance and the seamless handover between satellite and terrestrial networks. The system aims to provide passenger internet, operational communications, and data exchange for railway control centers.

Eutelsat intends to deploy this satellite configuration for both passenger and freight rail operators. The technology is designed to complement existing infrastructure by balancing network traffic across various critical railway tasks.
