Vitalik Buterin proposed EIP-8288, which was merged into the Ethereum EIP repository on September 9, 2026. The proposal, first introduced on June 5, 2026, aims to make the network quantum-safe by introducing a framework for recursive STARK aggregation.
The core problem addressed is that post-quantum signatures are significantly larger and more expensive to verify on-chain than current elliptic curve signatures. EIP-8288 solves this by allowing mempool nodes and block builders to batch multiple quantum-resistant signatures and STARK proofs into a single compact aggregate proof.
Technically, the proposal introduces a frame type for post-quantum signatures. Transactions now include a minimal base frame to keep the on-chain footprint small, while the aggregation logic is handled at the mempool and block builder layer rather than the consensus layer. This approach avoids the need for simultaneous node upgrades across the network.
The initiative is part of a broader strategic plan involving the I-star fork and the Lean Ethereum concept, emphasizing STARK verification as a core primitive. The proposal underwent peer review via PR #11772 and addressed community concerns regarding recursion soundness and omission accountability.
The implementation of EIP-8288 is expected to to reduce gas costs for post-quantum signatures by amortizing verification costs across an entire block. Additionally, it makes zero-knowledge proof-based privacy features more economically viable and improves the efficiency of L2 settlement for rollups that rely on STARK and SNARK proofs.
