The Ethereum layer-2 network Blast is shutting down due to a lack of economic sustainability. The team stated that the costs of maintaining the network currently exceed its earnings, leaving no viable path forward for the project.

Users are instructed to transfer their assets back to the Ethereum mainnet. To facilitate this, the team is reducing the withdrawal delay to 24 hours. However, a temporary pause on withdrawals will occur for approximately one week as assets are retrieved from the Lido liquid staking protocol.

The deadline for using the standard Blast interface for withdrawals is October 26. After this date, users must interact directly with the bridge contracts on Ethereum to recover their funds. The team plans to release specific instructions for this process before the deadline.

Launched in November 2023 by the creators of the Blur NFT marketplace, Blast initially attracted significant capital. It secured $20 million in a seed round co-led by Paradigm. By February 2024, the network held over $2.3 billion in total value locked.

The project faced several challenges, including a brief block production halt following the Dencun upgrade in March 2024. A June 2024 airdrop distributed $354 million in BLAST tokens, but the total value locked had already declined by approximately 30 percent from its peak.
