The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) framework successfully executed its first atomic cross-layer transaction on the Ethereum mainnet. Announced between October 5 and 6, 2026, the operation linked Layer 1 and Layer 2 networks within a single transaction block, ensuring that all components either succeed or fail simultaneously.

The system utilizes a proxy-and-bundle mechanism, where operations are packaged and submitted via the postAndVerifyBatch function on an L1 smart contract. This process relies on L1 builder sequencing, allowing Ethereum to maintain final authority over execution order while L2 operators propose transaction sequences.

EEZ was introduced on March 29, 2026, at the EthCC conference in Cannes. The project is backed by Gnosis and Zisk, with additional funding provided by the Ethereum Foundation. The initiative aims to unify liquidity and reduce silos by enabling synchronous composability across different layers.

Prior to the mainnet deployment, the team conducted testing in September 2026 using applications such as CoW Swap and Uniswap v4. The current implementation remains experimental, serving as a proof of concept rather than a full-scale production system, with security audits ongoing.
