An electronics enthusiast known as Blighted Agent successfully converted a set of laptop DDR5 SODIMM memory modules into desktop DIMMs. The project utilized two 16GB DDR5-5600 sticks purchased for $120 as donor components, with additional materials from AliExpress bringing the total cost to $175.

The process involved desoldering the SK hynix A-die memory chips from the SODIMMs using a hot air station and reballing them with 0.45mm leaded solder balls. These chips were then mounted onto blank desktop DDR5 PCBs, incorporating the original SPD and BIOS chips to ensure compatibility.

Following assembly, the modules were tested on an Asus ROG Maximus Z790 Apex Encore motherboard. The enthusiast achieved stable performance at DDR5-7800 CL38 with 1.40V, verified by 90 minutes of stress testing. The creator noted that such manual rework carries significant risks due to the lack of specialized diagnostic equipment for individual memory ICs.

This custom build serves as an alternative to purchasing high-end desktop memory kits. While the enthusiast spent $175 on the project, comparable new 32GB DDR5-6000 kits are currently priced around $449, and used SODIMM kits are often found at higher market rates.
