The accessory manufacturer Elevation Lab has officially discontinued its AirTag Silencer product. The company issued a public apology following widespread criticism regarding the potential misuse of the tool for unauthorized tracking.

The AirTag Silencer was designed to permanently disable the built-in speaker of an Apple AirTag. To use the tool, a user had to remove the battery, place the tracker in a specialized mold, and use a hammer to drive a pin into the speaker component.

Elevation Lab initially marketed the product as a security measure for owners to prevent thieves from locating and removing AirTags hidden on stolen items, such as bicycles. The company stated that the tool disabled the speaker without damaging other components of the tracker.

Following the backlash, the company acknowledged that the device could be exploited by individuals to track others without detection, particularly if the victim does not receive mobile alerts. Elevation Lab now intends to use its patents to prevent other manufacturers from producing similar devices.
