Einride and Lidl, a subsidiary of the Schwarz Group, have launched the first SAE Level 4 autonomous truck in Germany. The vehicle operates without a driver or safety operator on public roads, transporting goods between a warehouse and a retail store. This deployment marks the first time the Federal Motor Transport Authority has issued such a permit in the country.
The project follows a rigorous safety validation process required by German regulators. The truck functions independently within defined conditions, removing the need for human intervention. This initiative aims to address driver shortages and improve supply chain resilience for Lidl. The companies plan to expand the current route into a multi-stop model.
Einride views Germany as a key market for its autonomous delivery technology. The company already operates similar services in the US and other parts of Europe. Discussions are underway regarding further deployments across the broader Schwarz Group network to integrate these solutions into daily logistics operations.
