The European Central Bank is preparing to allocate a portion of its own funds to purchase tokenized public-sector securities. These transactions will be settled using the newly launched Pontes system, which serves as the Eurosystem’s infrastructure for distributed ledger technology.
The initiative aims to provide the ECB with practical experience regarding the investment lifecycle, including trade execution, settlement processes, and portfolio management. The bank intends to use a non-monetary-policy portfolio that generates income for covering operational expenses.
Initial investments will target euro-denominated securities from regional governments, central governments, public agencies, and European supranational institutions. The Executive Board of the ECB will finalize the timing and operational specifics following the completion of preparatory work.
The European Stability Mechanism noted that Pontes is designed to link emerging DLT platforms with existing central bank infrastructure. This integration is intended to maintain the role of central bank money as a primary settlement asset amid the ongoing tokenization of financial markets.
