The European Central Bank (ECB) has selected 36 payment service providers (PSPs) to participate in a pilot program for the digital euro. These participants were chosen from a pool of over 50 applicants, representing a diverse range of business models and geographic locations across the euro area.

The pilot is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2027 and will run for a duration of 12 months. During this period, participants will test a beta version of the digital euro to evaluate its technical functionality, operational processes, and user experience.

The initiative aims to gather feedback from merchants and providers to inform the technical specifications of the digital euro. The ECB emphasized that the project remains in a preparatory phase, and a final decision on the actual issuance of the currency depends on the adoption of relevant EU legislation.

The digital euro project was officially launched in 2023. Recent reports indicate that the development has gained momentum due to concerns regarding reliance on major American payment providers and the broader adoption of stablecoins.
