The European Central Bank has introduced Pontes, a new system designed for the settlement of wholesale tokenized asset transactions using central bank money. This platform serves as an alternative to private assets like stablecoins, aiming to provide a secure and stable environment for financial institutions operating within the tokenized finance ecosystem.
The launch follows the Eurosystem's 2024 testing phase, which evaluated the settlement of distributed ledger technology transactions. According to the ECB, participants in these trials emphasized that access to a risk-free settlement asset is essential for the broader adoption of tokenized finance. The system integrates issuance, trading, settlement, and custody on one platform.
Pontes is currently offering a core set of services, with plans to gradually expand its operational capacity and hours. The ECB expects full implementation of the system by 2028, at which point additional participants are scheduled to join. The initiative is a key component of the Eurosystem's broader strategy for the development of tokenized finance.
In addition to Pontes, the Eurosystem is working on a parallel initiative called Appia. This project focuses on exploring an integrated ecosystem for financial services based on distributed ledger technology. A formal blueprint for the Appia project is currently under development and is expected to be released by 2028.
