Discord is launching a global age assurance system that automatically categorizes users into age groups. The platform will assign users to groups based on account signals, including account history, activity levels across servers, and connected games. The company states that the model does not analyze user messages or calls.
Users identified as teenagers between 13 and 17 will have default safety protections, such as content filters and restricted access to adult-oriented servers. Discord expects that 90 percent of its user base will not need to manually confirm their age under this new automated approach.
The rollout excludes Australia and the UK for the time being. This update follows the suspension of a previous verification system in February, which had required video selfies or ID documentation and faced criticism due to a data breach at a third-party vendor.
If the automated system fails to determine an age or miscategorizes a user, individuals can manually verify their status. New verification options include credit cards, Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Google Wallet, and the AgeKey credential system.
