Developer realNyarime has released DiscImageStudio, an open-source tool designed to burn custom patterns onto the surface of optical discs. The software manipulates data writing processes to create varying light reflection effects, resulting in a relief-like visual appearance on the disc's data side.
The tool is compatible with standard CD, DVD, and single-layer Blu-ray discs with a capacity of up to 25GB. Users require a functional optical disc drive to perform the process. The developer recommends a calibration phase using a test disc to account for variations in laser precision and reflective materials, noting that three calibration cycles can significantly improve line positioning accuracy.
The choice of medium impacts the final output. CD-R discs are permanent and cannot be reused, while CD-RW discs may suffer from overlapping patterns or incomplete erasures due to the software's current lack of a full-wipe feature. Blu-ray discs offer the highest detail but require longer processing times, whereas CDs provide the fastest speeds with lower resolution.
DVDs are positioned as a middle ground, offering a balance between image detail and production efficiency while remaining the most accessible and affordable option. The total time required for the process depends on the specific optical drive speed and the type of disc being used.
