Supermarket chains across Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg, and Estonia reported unauthorized access to their refrigeration systems. The incidents involved remote temperature adjustments in fridges and freezers, which are typically connected to the internet for maintenance and alert purposes.
A Swedish Ica Kvantum store stated that temperatures in its units were remotely increased to 50 degrees Celsius overnight. The retailer Coop confirmed that unauthorized actors tampered with cooling systems at a small fraction of its locations.
Dutch retailer Ahold Delhaize reported an IT incident affecting refrigeration units in dozens of its supermarkets across Belgium and Luxembourg. The full scale of the current wave of attacks remains under investigation.
These events follow a similar incident last month in France, where cyberattacks on hundreds of refrigerators resulted in food spoilage estimated at millions of Euros. Similar malfunctions were also reported at US military bases.
