The dollar index currently stands at 99.15, while the Japanese yen remains near a seven-month high. The USD/JPY pair is trading at 153.49, approaching the previous week's low of 152.89. Market participants expect the Bank of Japan to implement a 25 basis point rate hike during its meeting on September 17-18.
Speculators have established a net long position on the yen for the first time since February 2026. Analysts suggest that if the Bank of Japan raises rates without providing guidance on future tightening, the USD/JPY rate could shift toward the 157-160 range. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has also influenced market sentiment regarding the yen.
Current economic data indicates a 60% to 86% probability of a rate hike, while the 2-year Treasury yield remains at 4.61%. Additionally, oil prices have exceeded $100 per barrel due to geopolitical tensions. This rise in energy costs creates structural challenges for Japan, impacting the trade deficit and complicating the central bank's monetary policy decisions.
