NASA's Curiosity rover has entered the Cache Creek quad in Gale crater, a region named for its geological diversity in British Columbia. The rover successfully completed its 48th drilling operation at a target designated as Basque Lakes.
The mission team utilized the APXS instrument for chemical analysis and the MAHLI camera to capture high-resolution images of the rock textures. Additionally, the ChemCam instrument fired its laser at the target to determine its composition.
Despite power constraints and the age of the rover, the team conducted further observations. This included imaging the surrounding terrain with Mastcam and analyzing a nearby bedrock target named Peace River using ChemCam.
The rover also monitored atmospheric conditions using Navcam and Mastcam. Plans for the upcoming week include delivering the drilled sample to the SAM instrument for further analysis before the rover continues its trek toward Mount Sharp.
