NASA's Curiosity rover has reached a milestone of 5,000 Martian days, or sols, on the surface of the Red Planet. The rover, which landed in August 2012, has been conducting research in the Gale Crater for over 14 years.
To commemorate the event, engineers created a panoramic image from the rover's navigation cameras. The composite photo combines two black-and-white shots taken at different times of day: one from the morning of August 30, 2026, and another from the evening of September 2.
The final image features color enhancements, with blue tones representing the morning and golden hues highlighting the evening. The frame also captures parts of the rover, including its communication antenna and the radioisotope thermoelectric generator.
Throughout its mission, Curiosity has explored sedimentary rocks and gathered data on Mars' climate history. The rover has climbed over one kilometer from its landing site and continues to study geological layers along the slopes of Mount Sharp.
