In August 2026, spot trading volume on major cryptocurrency exchanges increased by 19% to $510.4 billion. This recovery follows a low point in July, when volume dropped to $429 billion. Derivatives trading also saw growth, reaching $3.51 trillion compared to less than $3.1 trillion in the previous month.

Binance maintained a leading position in the market, recording $243.1 billion in spot volume and $1.67 trillion in futures. The exchange increased its spot market share to 47.6% from 43.9% in January. Meanwhile, Hyperliquid reported its highest futures volume of the year at $264.7 billion.

Market concentration remains high, with the three largest platforms accounting for 64.8% of spot volume and 74.7% of derivatives volume. Trading activity was supported by a 25% rise in Bitcoin prices and $3.52 billion in net inflows into US-listed Bitcoin ETFs during the month.

Despite the monthly gains, total spot volume is still 45% lower than the levels observed in January. The futures-to-spot ratio, which reached 6.87x in August, continues to hover near its 2026 highs, indicating that derivatives remain a dominant force in the current market landscape.
