The cryptocurrency market experienced a significant wave of liquidations exceeding $2.4 billion over the past week. This downturn coincided with Bitcoin prices retreating from approximately $85 700 to $82 500. Most of the forced closures affected long positions, which accounted for 85% to 93% of the total liquidations.
Individual daily sessions saw between $696 million and over $1.2 billion in positions wiped out, impacting between 100 000 and 180 000 traders per session. The broader crypto market capitalization fell by roughly $110 billion within a 36-hour window during the decline.
Market pressure was exacerbated by external factors, including US Treasury yields rising above 5.3% and oil prices exceeding $101 per barrel. Additionally, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded negative flows, with peak daily outflows reaching hundreds of millions of dollars.
On-chain data indicates that short-term holders transferred 55 600 BTC to exchanges at a loss. Despite the volatility, open interest in futures and derivatives remained stable near $150 billion. For context, a similar market event in October 2025 resulted in $19 billion in liquidations.
