A new report from PYMNTS Intelligence and Velera highlights the expanding collaboration between credit unions and financial technology companies. Credit unions currently serve nearly 146 million members in the United States, providing fintech firms with a significant and established customer base to scale their operations.

For credit unions, these partnerships offer access to advanced technologies that enhance service delivery and product offerings. The research indicates that fintechs typically focus on providing solutions in digital banking, payments, lending, and risk management to help credit unions adapt to evolving member requirements.

Despite mutual interest, the report identifies operational hurdles that delay product launches. Fintech companies cite lengthy approval processes and legacy infrastructure as primary obstacles. Credit unions also face internal barriers that complicate the integration of new ideas and service models.

To improve partnership outcomes, the report suggests that credit unions implement clearer purchasing guidelines and accelerate review cycles. Streamlining the transition from initial meetings to product deployment is expected to attract more technology providers and expedite the delivery of services.

The findings are based on the 2025-2026 Credit Union Innovation series. Data includes an April 2026 survey of 100 fintech executives and four surveys of 500 credit union leaders conducted between November 2024 and May 2026, tracking trends since late 2023.
