The Sheet-Native Computing Foundation has introduced a container registry that stores OCI images directly within Google Sheets cells. This system, part of the SheetHub DevOps forge, allows users to push and pull container images by encoding layers into base64 strings.
Data is managed via content-addressing using sha256 digests. Because Google Sheets limits cells to 50,000 characters, the registry shards larger layers across multiple cells. The system includes automatic escaping for base64 characters that could be misinterpreted as spreadsheet formulas, ensuring data integrity.
The registry supports standard operations such as push, pull, list, and view. It is designed for small images like static binaries, Alpine, or WASM modules. Performance is constrained by the Sheets API, which allows approximately 60 requests per minute, and a limit of 10 million cells per spreadsheet.
Developed with contributions from prateeekbuilds, the project includes over 50 tests. The registry aims to integrate with Sheeternetes and sheetbuild, allowing the forge and container runtime to share the same storage within the spreadsheet environment.
