A Manhattan federal jury convicted cybersecurity consultant Jonathan Spalletta of computer fraud and money laundering on October 7, 2026. The verdict followed two attacks on the decentralized exchange Uranium Finance in 2021, which resulted in the theft of over $53 million in crypto assets and the subsequent closure of the platform.
The first exploit occurred on April 8, 2021, yielding $1.4 million. A second attack on April 28, 2021, targeted 26 liquidity pools and netted approximately $53.3 million. Prosecutors allege that Spalletta laundered roughly $26 million through the Tornado Cash mixer between 2021 and 2023.
Investigators linked over $3 million of the stolen funds to collectibles, including a Black Lotus card valued at $500,000, Pokémon sets worth over $1 million, and a Roman coin costing $601,500. Authorities seized $31 million in crypto from Spalletta in February 2025.
Spalletta was charged in March 2026 and his trial began on September 28, 2026. He faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, with 10 years for fraud and 20 years for money laundering. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for February 16, 2027.
