Consensys Software Inc. is dividing its operations into two separate entities. The existing company will be rebranded as MetaMask, focusing exclusively on the consumer platform. A newly formed Consensys will manage the Ethereum protocols and institutional blockchain infrastructure, including the Linea network.
Joe Lubin, co-founder of Consensys, will lead MetaMask as chairman and CEO. The new Consensys entity will be headed by CEO Mike Kriak and President David Cunningham, while Lubin will remain its executive chairman.
The separation of consumer finance and institutional infrastructure is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Both companies will operate independently while continuing to build within the same ecosystem.
MetaMask has recorded over 100 million downloads in approximately 190 countries and has processed trillions of dollars in transaction volume. The wallet has expanded its features, including the launch of Money Account in June for stablecoin yield, payments, and trading.
The platform has also broadened its support for various networks. It added Bitcoin support in December after previously integrating Solana. This follows the 2025 launch of the mUSD stablecoin on Ethereum and the Linea layer-2 network, with plans to use the token for payments via a MetaMask debit card.
