Consensys Software Inc. (CSI) is splitting into two independent companies by the end of 2026. The existing CSI entity will be rebranded as MetaMask, focusing on consumer-facing products and the MetaMask platform. Joe Lubin will serve as the Chairman and CEO of the new MetaMask company.

The Protocols Group and institutional infrastructure business will be moved into a separate entity named ConsenSys. This new company will be led by CEO Mike Criak and President David Cunningham, with Joe Lubin serving as Executive Chairman of the Board. The entity will manage L2 network Linea, Ethereum clients Besu and Teku, and infrastructure for banks and payment organizations.

The split is driven by different market trends: retail users are integrating wallets into daily finances, while institutional clients are moving from pilot projects to real blockchain application. Each segment now requires a separate team and separate funding strategies.

MetaMask will continue to prioritize the Ethereum ecosystem while maintaining support for other blockchains. The company aims to combine payments, savings, and investment tools on a single platform. A key step in this strategy is the launch of the Money Account, which integrates yield, payments, and trading from a single balance.

ConsenSys will focus on the institutional market, including tokenization, stablecoins, and programmable settlements. David Cunningham noted that the company will focus on ensuring interoperability between financial platforms while meeting requirements for privacy, stability, and operational scale. Additionally, it was previously reported that ConsenSys is expected to go public in the US this autumn.
