Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado has introduced six new electric school buses equipped with bidirectional charging capabilities. These vehicles, manufactured by IC, are now operational for the current school year, serving a district that encompasses 145 schools and 75,000 students.
The project received $3.4 million in funding from Xcel Energy via its Electric School Bus Program. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the utility company to deploy 38 electric buses and 30 bidirectional charging systems across the state of Colorado.
Highland Electric Fleets manages the project through its Electrification-as-a-Service model. The company provides the necessary infrastructure, vehicles, and long-term operational support to ensure the fleet functions effectively within the district.
The deployment serves as a demonstration of vehicle-to-grid technology. The buses act as mobile energy storage units, allowing them to return electricity to the grid when not in use, providing data on how such systems integrate with fleet operations and energy infrastructure.
