Coinbase has finalized the integration of the Deribit derivatives exchange, establishing a regulated channel for eligible US customers to access global crypto derivatives markets. This move consolidates Coinbase's international derivatives operations with Deribit, utilizing the Coinbase Financial Markets unit, which operates under the oversight of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
The migration of balances and positions from the Coinbase International Exchange to Deribit was completed on October 1. US institutional clients can now access Deribit's options and perpetual futures via Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets. Previously, these clients were required to maintain offshore entities and separate trading infrastructure to participate in these markets.
According to Coinbase, derivatives represent approximately 80% of global crypto trading volume. The company plans to launch options for Coinbase Prime users in the coming weeks. Additionally, Coinbase intends to roll out options for eligible non-US retail traders during the same period, with access for US retail customers scheduled to follow later this year.
