Cloudflare has launched Basin, a serverless data platform designed to simplify analytics for small businesses and development teams. The service removes the need for companies to maintain dedicated server infrastructure or manage complex data pipelines.
The platform is built on the open-source Apache Iceberg table format and utilizes Cloudflare R2, the company's egress-free distributed object storage. This architecture allows analytics engines like Apache Spark and DuckDB to query data directly at its source without moving files.
By leveraging its global network, Cloudflare aims to reduce latency and costs associated with data movement. The company has introduced a simplified pricing model where customers are charged based on the volume of data analyzed.
This expansion places Cloudflare in direct competition with established data warehouse providers such as Snowflake and Databricks. While the company does not position Basin as a total replacement for existing warehouses, it targets workloads at the edge of the market.
