The European automotive suppliers association CLEPA conducted a survey across five EU nations to measure consumer interest in battery-electric vehicles. The study included more than 5,200 participants from Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and Spain.
Data indicates that only 8 per cent of those surveyed plan to choose an electric car for their next vehicle purchase. This result differs significantly from other recent industry studies, according to reports from Automobilwoche.
Experts suggest the survey methodology may have influenced the findings. CLEPA included all adults in the sample, regardless of whether they hold a driver’s license, own a car, or have current plans to buy a vehicle.
Benjamin Krieger, Secretary-General of CLEPA, noted that a large share of electric vehicle sales currently originates from commercial fleet registrations, which the survey does not specifically isolate.
Additionally, the online survey design allowed participants to select two preferred powertrain types simultaneously. This permitted respondents to choose combinations such as internal combustion engines alongside electric or hybrid options.
