Economist Claudia Sahm now supports Federal Reserve rate hikes, doubting that inflation will drop to the 2% target without additional policy measures. This shift occurs while the Federal Reserve keeps its policy rate in the 3.50%-3.75% range, even though inflation remains above the target level.
Financial markets view Sahm's stance as a signal of potential upcoming rate increases. A more hawkish approach by the Fed typically results in tighter financial conditions, which affects broad equity pricing and Treasury-duration.
Market participants are focusing on the Federal Reserve meetings scheduled for September and October 2026. Currently, the probability of a rate hike is priced at 52% for the September meeting and 62% for the October meeting.
