Citigroup and Coinbase have entered a strategic partnership to provide institutional clients with payment solutions based on stablecoins. The collaboration aims to streamline fiat-to-crypto transactions by combining the global payment infrastructure of Citi with the digital asset expertise of the exchange.
Citi operates a network covering 94 markets and integrates with over 300 clearing systems. The initial phase of the deal focuses on optimizing fiat pay-ins and pay-outs for Coinbase on-ramp and off-ramp transactions. The companies also intend to develop methods for settling payments directly on blockchain rails.
The partnership includes plans to implement 24/7 payment capabilities. This initiative aligns with Citi's broader digital asset strategy, which currently features the Citi Token Services platform for cross-border money movement and includes a planned launch of crypto custody services in 2026.
Despite the initial announcement in October 2025, no major updates regarding the partnership were reported through September 2026. The project faces challenges related to the complex technical integration of legacy banking systems with blockchain networks and evolving global regulations for stablecoins.
