China has surpassed its total car export volume for 2025 within the first eight months of 2026. From January through August, the country exported 6.2 million passenger vehicles, exceeding the 6.1 million units recorded for the entirety of 2025.
New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), which include battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models, are driving this growth. In August, NEV exports increased by 154.7% compared to the same month last year, accounting for 58.4% of total Chinese car exports.
Projections suggest that China could export approximately 9 million vehicles by the end of 2026, representing a potential annual increase of around 50%. This trajectory positions China to potentially surpass Germany in total export value, a metric currently led by German manufacturers.
China's position in the global automotive market has shifted significantly over the past six years. In 2020, the country ranked as the world's sixth-largest car exporter, trailing behind Japan, Mexico, Germany, South Korea, and the United States.
