Overall passenger vehicle retail sales in China fell by 19 percent year-on-year to 210 000 units during the period from September 1 to September 6. Year-to-date retail sales for the broader passenger vehicle market reached 11.926 million units.
The China Passenger Car Association noted that the market faces a high comparison base due to record sales in September 2025 caused by expiring regional subsidies. Exports remain a significant support factor, with 1.05 million vehicles exported in August alone.
As of August 2026, BYD leads the Chinese new energy vehicle market with a 23.3 percent share. Tesla holds a 5.0 percent share, securing the sixth position, while Leapmotor maintains the third spot with the fastest growth among the top ten manufacturers.
